To put our patients' minds at ease, Kaydental in North York is pleased to offer panoramic x-rays as a diagnostic tool. Our office uses Planmeca, which is an advanced digital dental panoramic x-ray unit.
Panoramic x-rays are extraoral devices, which means the imaging machine is outside of your mouth. You will be asked to stand or sit in the center of the unit, where the technician will carefully position and secure your head, and then place a bite-blocker in your mouth to ensure your teeth are correctly aligned.
Instead of relying on film placed inside your mouth, like traditional x-rays like bitewings x-rays, the x-ray tube rotates in a semicircle around your head, starting from one side of your jaw and ending on the other, and projects a beam through your mouth onto a film that's rotating opposite the x-ray tube. The x-ray lasts between 12-20 seconds, so it's quick and easy to perform.
A panoramic dental x-ray creates an image of your entire mouth, including your upper and lower jaws, teeth and more. This allows your dentist to notice problems such as bone abnormalities, fractures, cysts, impacted teeth, infections and tumours. It can also help your dentist plan treatments such as braces, implants, or dentures.
If you have any questions about panoramic x-rays, please feel free to ask our dentists at your next visit.
At our North York dental office, our fees are based on the most current Ontario Dental Association fee guides.
