Dentures and Denture Care

Dentures are an important part of everyday life, helping restore comfort, confidence and function. Whether you're considering dentures for the first time or have worn them for years, NOW is a time to revisit what they offer and how to care for them.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are custom-made appliances designed to replace missing teeth. They come in several forms:

  • Complete Dentures: for those missing all teeth in the upper or lower jaw
  • Partial Dentures: for those missing some teeth but not all
  • Temporary Dentures: used while waiting for permanent replacements
  • Implant-supported Dentures: offer added stability and comfort

Modern dentures are more natural-looking, lightweight, and comfortable than ever before. Advances in materials and digital design mean better fit, improved chewing ability and a smile that feels like your own.

Dentures remain one of the most accessible and effective solutions for tooth loss. Compared to implants or bridges, they offer:

  • Affordability: often a fraction of the cost of surgical alternatives
  • Accessibility: suitable for people with medical conditions or bone loss
  • Customization: tailored to your mouth for comfort and appearance

Denture Care

Daily care helps extend the life of your dentures and protect your oral health:

  • Brush gently with a soft-bristle brush and mild soap (not regular toothpaste)
  • Soak overnight in warm water or denture cleanser
  • Rinse after meals and clean your gums and any remaining teeth
  • Schedule regular checkups to assess fit and comfort - This is particularly important for those with full dentures as it gives the dentist an opportunity to check the soft tissues of your mouth (gums, cheeks, tongue, palate) for any signs of concern

If dentures feel loose, cause irritation, or make eating difficult, consider booking a reline or adjustment.

As of 2025, many Canadian residents now qualify for denture coverage under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP):

  • Covers complete and partial dentures, fittings, adjustments, and repairs
  • Available to those with no private dental insurance
  • Income-based support is available to families earning under $90,000

You can check eligibility and apply through the official CDCP website here.

Dentures aren't just about replacing teeth - they're about restoring quality of life. If you're experiencing discomfort, notice changes in fit, or simply want to explore your options, contact our office today to book your appointment and let your smile shine again.
