At Kaydental in North York, Dr. Stephen Kay is pleased to provide Oral Appliance Therapy for patients suffering from snoring and mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
Snoring occurs when tissues obstructing your airway vibrate as you breath during sleep. Sometimes, due to excessive airway tissue and other anatomical problems, your airway completely closes while sleeping. When this happens, your nervous system urgently arouses you just enough so that you start to breath again. This cycle may continue throughout the night. We call this Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The result is a poor sleep pattern that robs your body of the rest it needs to function properly and puts great strain on many other systems and organs including your heart!
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea include:
If you or someone you know suffers from some of these symptoms, it is essential that you consult your family doctor or a sleep physician. The medical doctor will determine the need for testing and a diagnosis. If you have been diagnosed with snoring or obstructive sleep apnea, by your doctor, and you are a candidate for treatment by an oral appliance, please contact Dr. Stephen Kay to discuss the various dental appliance treatment options. The appliances we may use include SomnoDent, ProSomnus, and Panthera.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a very serious medical disorder that can have serious health consequences. Treatments that can help manage these problems are effective and may include Lifestyle Changes, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machines (CPAP), Surgery, and Oral Appliances. There are advantages and disadvantages with each type of treatment. Oral appliances (Oral Appliance Therapy) work by moving your jaw and tongue forward, thus opening your airway and eliminating snoring and obstructive sleep apnea symptoms.
